Concussion & yoga

Concussion and the healing art of yoga

A rather small "push" hit my little car. I was not driving fast when I was sitting in a queue on the main street in Santa Barbara, California. I already had noticed in the rearview mirror the giant Cadillac with the two women certainly NOT looking much at the queue in front of them. I was in a really good mood, my life was running on rails, I thought, and had just been offered a starring role in a Coca Cola commercial! A big thing when you are only 19 years old 😊

Then something happened that was going to change my life path forever. The clash itself was not very violent I thought I was a little ear in the head and the two ladies kindly came up to me and even gave me their business card. I was more worried about my car as it was a BMW that I had borrowed and checked if there were dents.

Relieved, I drove home to my house in Ojai, up in the mountains. I was standing talking to my friend John when he asked me why my left side kind of “hung” and my left eye had water running out of it. Suddenly I became aware of the cutting pain in my left side of my head and it was as if my left side was being squeezed. There was also a faint throbbing sensation in my head.

The diagnosis was concussion and whiplash.
But that it would take 7 years before the feeling of living in a glass bobbel disappeared - I did not have the wildest imagination to believe. (The whole healing story you have to read about in my book when it is published 😊)
But it was the magical work of yoga, and breathing exercises that were to become the healing factor for my healing and total recovery, and as you know, also my way of life🙏🏻And over the last 35 years, I have taught thousands who suffer from the aftermath of one or more concussions and whiplash. Over the years, I have developed yoga programs, readjusted the programs countless of times and tried several hundreds of yoga programs and breathing exercises that will basically strengthen the student and eventually overcome the many different physical, mental, emotional, emotional and social reactions that occur as a result of concussion. And it has led to that I am teaching a course that first runs over 8 weeks - once a week. Then I watch the students where he or she "is" and when the actual healing process begins. Once the student has become stable (and sometimes it takes half a year, other times up to two years) they come to my 12 week yoga course once a week. Gradually I experience how the spark of life returns to their eyes. One thing is for sure - after one - or more - concussions, you will no more return to who you were, but instead come out on the other side, as a much more wise human being, a whole human being if I may say so. It is beautiful to experience, and I feel that it is my "mission" here on earth, to share my experiences and insights to the many who have experienced how their lives have been turned upside down, and have difficulty it is finding a foothold again.
